For the last day of spring break we took the boys to Western Playland. It was so much fun.

See Jacob in the middle with his thumbs up?

and that did this….

After the fall.....

Notice the look of “I think i’ll just throw up on you when my heart moves back down into my chest and stops blocking my throat.”?Tears....

Something tells me he won’t go on that ride again. Ha!

Wesley decided it was time to give up the Mohawk and as I stood there cutting his hair off , I had to stand up on my toes to get the sides of his head. I couldn’t believe he is almost as tall as I am. It seemed like only yesterday that he was running into my tummy and thinking it was funny.  I look at him now and the little round face is gone and he is starting to worry more about his appearance and how he smells after gym class. He is also concerned with the whole girl-boy dynamic.

I asked him why he felt it was time to give up the Mohawk and he said it was heavy and making his head hurt. My guess is that it has something to do with how he is looked at by the little girls at his school.  Whatever the reason may be, his appearance changed so much that I had to suck in my breath and stand back and just look at him in the mirror.

The cities 1st annual museum scavenger hunt is going on. My boss decided this was a good thing for our students to do as part of getting them out into the community. A good idea yes, but if you are going to be visiting six museums, don’t do it in a single day.

We all went, meaning all four of us and a friend of the boys. We headed out at 9 a.m. when the first museum opened and went from there.  The first  museum we went to had a ceramics display. There were some really interesting pieces that were breathtaking, and some that were a little odd (double sided dude with the butterfly penis). The security guard was a little agressive in sharing his knowledge of everything, and I warned Kevin about this before we went so that he could prepare himself to be shadowed.  I just smile and walk away, and do it about three times and the guard gets the message.

The second museum had three different displays. Tattoos, New Mexico History and a photographer’s work. The tattoo display was interesting. It had a saying on one of the plaques “people with tattoos are mysterious” That made me laugh a bit. I know a lot of people with tattoos, and I know a lot of people without tattoos and one is not any more mysterious to me than the other. It was interesting. I found the photographs a little lifeless and dull. Not what the guy was aiming for i’m sure, but to me they could have been better.

The history in the second display was by far the most interesting out of the three. The boys were running around from one thing to the next just soaking it all in. When we had finished with all three displays they were peeking into other rooms asking “is there any more to see, Mom?” It was fabulous.

The Railroad Museum was right before lunch. I was really looking forward to this one, and was so disappointed. they had a few rooms with some train memorabilia, and one single little setup with a tiny train going around a track of a mini display. The best thing there was the graffitti on the train cars and an electric engine.

University Museum was in the process of switching out their displays so there were two that were actually open. There was some gorgeous pottery and artifacts from indian tribes that were (are) native to the region. Jacob made his way around them and came back and said “i like all of them except for those over there.” It turned out that particular tribe made all of it’s little people replicas anatomically correct.

The absolute best one was the Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum. It cost us $16 to get in and it was worth every penny. The displays were fabulous.  The room where the historic displays were had interactive things to do for the kids. There were the cows, and the milking demonstration. There was a calf there that licked the boys one the forehead. We watched a blacksmith make a nail among other things. It was worth every penny. They had wine tasting in the gift shop. Yes, I did try all of them and liked one so much that I took a bottle home with me. The whole day was just exaustive and facinating.

When we left there, we had about an hour and a half until the next museum closed so we rushed off to the mall. The displays there change often and this one in particular was what you could do with plants, besides eat them of course. It was fun, bot overly crowded and so we hurried through and got our papers stamped, turned in and went home.

Kids are funny. Bleu and Wesley were in the boys bedroom sitting on the floor each with a psp in hand looking at themes to download.  I was in there trying to get Horton Hears a Who off the computer and onto a disk for the other two boys and they both started cracking up. I asked them what was so funny and they both replied at the same time with two completely different answers “A simpson’s theme! A dead dog theme!” I turned around in the chair and said “Dead dog theme? What’s so funny about a dead dog theme?” He said “it’s a bunch of kids standing there looking at a dead dog.” I said, “that’s not funny, now if they were taking turns poking it with a stick, that would be funny.” It was supposed to gross them out, but instead it just brought more laughter. I love it when the boys get together with their friends and just laugh, even if they are intentionally hitting one another in the vitals with rubber bouncy balls, it’s hillarious.

“What’s the use of  worrying? It never was worthwhile, so, pack up your troubles in your old kit-bag, and smile ,smile ,smile.”

Christmas used to be a really hard time for us because we never seemed to have it together when we needed to. Luckily for us there was always tax-return time and we made up for it then. This year though, this is the year we grabbed our asses with both hands and jumped right in to the finally-got-our-shit-together-pool. It’s a good feeling…to know that this is going to be the year that the boys wake up and get some really good stuff under the tree, things they actually wanted instead of things that they have to settle for because it’s all we could afford.

Honestly I can’t wait for it all to be over and we can throw the tree out the back door put all the decorations away and life will return to normal. I am looking forward to the new year for a number of reasons. First and foremost is school. Kevin is going back and it will be my last year. Haleleujah I will have my bachelors this time next year. I know I have mentioned somewhere how burnt out I am.

I have already started to declutter. I don’t want to walk through this house again and think I need to clean up this space or that space. So far today I have thrown away four trash bags full of crap we just don’t need or haven’t used, and I have just as many full of clothing and other stuff I don’t really need. The boys are supposed to go through their clothes as well, but that remains to be seen.

Now that I think about it, why am I doing this right now, when I will have to do it again after the holidays?

I have decided that in the new year I’m going to take my life back one piece at a time. I started with ditching my blackberry  because seriously, who really needs one of those?? I pledge to commit to working out 6 days a week somehow somewhere, preferably with a buddy but all of my motivated friends live out of state. Total suckage. So it will be just me and my laptop and some online episodes of shows I purposely didn’t sit down for.

So, Yeah. Christmas, I’m ready for you this go-around. New year? Bring it on, I’m ready!

Jacob had a field trip haloween day to the maze. I had never been and neither had Wes, so he skipped school and off we went.

This past weekend Kevin and I were discussing the fact that the boys needed more room than what they had. The constant bickering about who was in who’s space was getting a little old. For a while we had talked about switching rooms with them, after all they are growing boys and needed some room to stretch and we are adults an all we do in our room is sleep and stuff. ;0)

We moved all of their stuff into our room and vice versa after about 30 minutes of carrying around a tape measure to make sure it was going to fit. Its the best thing we ever thought of. Now instead of bunk beads with limited floor space, they each have a side of the room equivalent to what they had combined before. They are happy. We are happy. Our room looks like a tiny room you would expect to have at a B&B in the country somewhere, but instead of pretty scenery out the window, it’s still the same old neighborhood. The walls in the boys old room (our new room) are a really pretty grey, so the white lamps and wood furniture just look great. The walls in our old room however (big and dull paneling) were taken care of quite easily.

On Wesley’s birthday, when we went to Hooters, they each got a calendar and they have been carrying them around like they were a  “little golden book for the big boy” ever since. Well, since there was so much wall space, I thought to myself, they need some posters. So when I suggested taking their hooters calendars and hanging them on the wall they agreed. We took out the staples and tore the pages so that they would make a collage on the wall, two calendars took care of two walls. Kevin’s brother gave us a whole bunch of stuff when he moved last month and in the halloween box there was a string of plain orange lights, which we put up. So now it’s their own little Hooter’s Haven. Jacob suggested getting some hooters merchandise to hang up, but all I have to say to that is “Christmas is comin’!”

The plus side…going in there is definitely an all natural appetite suppressant.

This past weekend

my oldest son turned 12.

We asked him where he wanted to go, and told him he could order anything he wanted that was on the menu. He chose Hooters, and ordered the 50 piece hotwings.

I think it was the best $71 we ever spent.

**included in the total was the $10 tip and $2 for two calendars.

Middle school is going quite well for Wesley. I took him to school this morning and we stopped and got a soda and corn nuts (he had a healthy breakfast before he left the house.) I asked him if he minded bing dropped of earlier than normal and

he said “no mom, I’m not afraid anymore.”

I asked him “you were scared at first? I completely understand, going from elementary to middle school can be a scary thing but not that you are settled in it’s gotten better right?”

he said “no, I made friends with some 7th and eighth graders.”

I said “how did you manage to make friends with 7th and 8th graders?”

He said “the hair mom, the hair!”
